Chaque année, le 16 novembre, est célébrée la Journée internationale de la tolérance avec des activités qui s'adressent à la fois aux établissements d'enseignement et au grand public.

L’Assemblée générale des Nations Unies a instauré cette Journée par sa résolution 51/95 du 12 décembre 1996, faisant suite à l'Année 1995 pour la tolérance proclamée par ladite Assemblée à l'initiative de la Déclaration de principes sur la tolérance de l’UNESCO adoptée en 1995.

Dans le document final du Sommet mondial de 2005, les chefs d'États et de Gouvernements s'engagent à élargir partout le bien-être humain, la liberté et le progrès, et à encourager la tolérance, le respect, le dialogue et la coopération entre les différentes cultures, civilisations et populations.
