Violence and Peace at school
Letter n°32, May 2006

ReciprociteIn the United States, the number of acts of violence has remained stable during 2002 and 2003, although that number is significantly lower than was recorded at the beginning of the 1990’s.  According to the Washington Post, some experts attribute this current low rate of criminality to three factors:  the installation of metal detectors and surveillance cameras in buildings, the increased presence of security personnel and the implementation of anti-bullying programmes in schools.  More

Takeover bid of school ?
Letter n°30, March 2006

Reciprocite

Since the 1980’s, educational trends have been greatly influenced by economically oriented international organisations whose national politics pursue a relay race, assuring that schools are as appropriate as possible to present economic requirements, and that the beliefs of decision-makers and educational planners are thereby inscribed in the logic of competition.

Parallel to this, in another context, other international organisations are promoting an education based on ideas such as social justice and respect for human rights, thereby making a case for the school where universal values aim to eliminate in the future the socio-economic inequalities that cause injustice and social tensions.  More

Students under surveillance
Letter n°19, December 2004

ReciprociteChildren with microchips in their satchels so that their whereabouts can be tracked, school personnel barricaded behind closed doors over which are enthroned video surveillance systems; this is what we are approaching in the best of all possible worlds. Symptoms of practices which contribute to reinforcing the high security which henceforth will enter more or less surreptitiously into the way of life in school, no doubt to the great satisfaction of the electronics industry.

Some recent examples. More
