Une enquête réalisée pour le compte de l'UNICEF-France par l'Observatoire international de la violence à l'école révèle, qu'en France, plus d'un enfant sur dix est harcelé par ses camarades d'école. La recherche souligne les conséquences psychologiques, sanitaire et scolaire du harcèlement : absentéisme, perte d'estime de soi, tendances dépressives et suicidaires et plaide pour l'importance des programmes de prévention précoce, plus efficaces et moins onéreux en termes de dépenses de santé, d'assistance sociale et de maintien de l'ordre que les dispositifs de répression ou de traitement. L'étude est basée sur un échantillon de 12 000 élèves âgés de huit à douze ans.
